Scale-symmetry in soliton solutions and a possible explanation of rogue waves

We will discuss a possible trigger mechanism in rogue wave formation based on the emergence of self-similarity in soliton solutions of the generalized nonlinear Schroedinger Equation. We will then discuss the appearance of scale-symmetry in specific physical regimes of optical spatial solitons in photorefractive crystals and describe preliminary experiments that attempt to find a correlation between self-similarity and rogue phenomena.
